Following the Water

How activated carbon made from local leftovers is matched to the water it will clean, and given a finish that takes out chromium, arsenic or selenium. Press Start here for a short introduction, then open a chapter from the map. Each chapter can be watched with narration or stepped through at your own pace, and brings you back to the map when it ends.

Illustrated bird's-eye view of a northern landscape: on the left a carbon plant with a long kiln, two silos and a stockpile of coke, and a small town where a house frame is going up beside a bin of waste wood; a road runs past a small white laboratory. In the middle, a mine: an open pit, a tailings pond behind an earth dam, a pile of waste rock with a rusty orange seep at its foot, and a smaller runoff pond. Pipes lead from the ponds to a white treatment building with three tall columns, and clear water flows from it down a creek into a blue lake with two loons.
